Value - Something that is important worthy or useful for human beings, that given the feeling of
- Happiness,
- Prosperity
Education - Education is the process of teaching, learning skills and knowledge.
Education is the means to impart knowledge and skills in Human Being.
Value Education - Value Education deals with the learning of
- what is universally valueable to all of us
- what is conductive to our individual and collective happiness and prosperity in a sustainable way.
Value Education enables us to be in harmony
- within ourselves
- with other human beings
- with rest of nature
Need For Value Education
- Value Education helps in identification of basic aspirations of all human beings.
- Value Education helps in living with correct understanding of values, which being happiness in continuity, otherwise we feel deprived frustrated and unhappy.
- Value and skills are complementary for success of any human endeavour.
5 Basic Guidelines for Value Education
1 Universal - Universal means something that is related to or applicable to all human beings.
Ex- All human beings needs Oxygen to breathe.
2 Rational - Rational means something based on logic reason.
Ex - 1+1 = 2 not 11
3 Natural & Verifiable - Natural means exiting derived from nature, not made.
Natural means acceptable in a natural manner to all human beings, it will leads to full fill ment happines.
Verifiable means something that can checked and verified.
4 All Encompassing - Value education is aimed at transforming our consciousness and living. Hence, it needs to cover all the dimensions (thought, behaviour, work and realization) and levels (individual, family, society, nature and existence) of human life and profession.
5 Leading to Harmony - The value education ultimately is targeted to promote harmony within the individual, among human beings and with nature.
Types of value education
There are five types of value education: moral, spiritual, social, cultural and ecological.
1. Teaching Moral Values
Emphasizes the importance of ethical principles and virtues such as honesty, compassion, and responsibility
Teach students to make moral decisions and develop strong moral character.
2. Spiritual Values Education
Focuses on personal inner development and connection to higher powers or spirituality
Allows students to explore their beliefs and values and develop a sense of inner peace and harmony.
3. Social Values Education
Promote values related to social responsibility and involvement in the community, such as kindness, empathy, and respect for others
Teach them to be responsible and caring members of society and work for the common good.
4. Cultural Values Education
Focuses on the importance of diversity and cultural awareness.
Teach students to respect and appreciate the cultural differences of others and to promote cultural understanding and tolerance.
5. Environmental Values Education
Encourage students to develop a sense of responsibility and respect for the natural world and its resources
Teach students about the impact of human activities on the environment and how to live sustainably and protect the earth's ecosystems.
